My Super Duke 1290 build

Postby Savage » Sun Oct 08, 2017 9:42 am

Got my 2017 Super Duke, with 4000k's on the clock.
Got a good price, plus trade in, only thing I wasn't too keen on was the colour, the front being white just looks tacked on, kinda a bitsa if you know what I meen,
So I ordered some carbon goodies to help.

Rear Hugger

Front Fender

And Tank Cover
Image

I screwed up with the tank cover, as my bike being a 2017 model, doesn't need the hole in for the ignition. Dammit....

I got the Fender and hugger, in matte twill, and bought some two pac clear in satin (I wan't a satin finish)
So sanded them down and cleared them.

Unfortunately they have more of a shine than I wanted, will talk to the paint supplier to see what they think, but hey I prefer how it looks than before.

Before:

And after

As I get more parts I post here.

I also intend to do the front fairings the same colour as the fuel tank, I just scanned digitised and edited the stickers, and had a friend print them on laminate, also did the fuel tank decal (In case I paint it too).
$55, instead of $360 dealership wanted.

Waiting for them to arrive in the mail, to see how they look!

Looks a lot better.

I think the major reason I prefer the black model is the fact that the white/grey/orange colors create too many lines where the body panes fit together. The front fender is a perfect example where in a single color it looks like a well thought out cohesive structure, it looks fast! When you break up the colors it looks cheap and very "put together" like a set of Legos or a Kawasaki.

Couldn't agree more on the colour.

Rest of the power parts seat arrive, and prompted fitted.
Image

Also got ASV F3 levers.
Fitted the Brake, no problems
Image

But the clutch, the bushings supplied was either too small, or too much movement.
This is the pivot pin, and this is supposed to be the KTM busing, as you can see no chance it can fit though
Image

I tried the other busing that came with it, but too much play
Image

Sent an email to ASV but will also ring local Motorcycle shop where I got the leers from to see what they say.

Made the same fender/tail chop changes--and then the BST carbon wheels to match the fenders.

I'm thinking of going fiber on my 17 as well... it looks like you mixed matte and glossy. is that right? which do you prefer and why?

I actually want a Satin finish.
Was thinking glossy on top for the tank to match in with the tank.

I've re-spray painted the matte carbon bits with two pack clear with flattening base, enough to give a Satin look.

Undecided with the top cover as I ordered the wrong part.

But the side covers will be a Satin finish, so will decide on a top cover later.

Update, had fitted a Comp Werkes GP exhaust, but was too loud so ended up selling it,.

Painted the tank, a darker almost black colour (Colour matched the tank, and added more black to the mix)
And painted the fairings with new stickers the original colour the tank was.

Also fitted a full Akrapovič exhaust..

Bike how it sits, just waiting on a tail tidy, and will also fit an alarm.

Looks so much better than white. I was thinking if I bought a 2017 I would get that color and either change the white parts to black or carbon fiber. Good to know I still have an imagination. Reminds me of the 08 sdr, imo probably the best looking color scheme.

Savage, looks AWESOME, great color combo........................................................sorry but two things stick out as if they don't belong on your awesome job. The shock spring and the subframe. The subframe should match the tank, shrouds or ORANGE like the main frame or if they made carbon fiber paint  it would look cool in carbon. The rear shock spring always looks good in orange.
But that's just a personal opinion, still looks awesomely great!

Thanks,
Shock spring, can stay like it is!... Seems too much work to change it, but funny you say about the subframe, I;ve been toying with the idea.
Seems people at my work say have it black, while friends and the mrs say keep it white, I post a photoshop photo to get input.

One thing is, orange subframe is a definite no.

Hi all,
Opinions wanted.

I'm toying with the idea of changing the subframe to black.

Bike how it is now

And with some photo editing, black subframe.

Thoughts?

You already know my preference with black or not white. The white made some sense with the stock white shrouds but now it immediately draws the (my) eye away from your nice dark tank, shrouds and all of the carbon. In white it looks out of place and distracting. Try not looking at the WHITE subframe, hard to do eh? All that great work you've done and being up staged by a factory stock white subframe

How about dip or hydro graphics and do it in mock carbon fiber?

I'm actually setting up my hydro dipping tank, just getting the 3 phase circuit sorted out.
But for the sub frame, I'll keep it simple.

I might do a mock up with the proto wheels from the beast, to see how that looks.
