1290 2014 vs 2015 vs 2016

Postby pigpenracing » Fri Feb 05, 2016 2:18 pm

Hey guys,
It's been awhile since I have been here. I bought a 1290 Super Duke in 2014 and loved the bike. I had some stuff going on and ended up selling it. I have missed the bike! I am getting my 13 year old son a 390 Duke for his birthday and I am thinking about another 1290 for myself.
I can get a good deal on a new 2015 but for $1600 more I can get a new 2016. I am leaning toward the 2016. Have there been any changes? I need to know if the 2016 is as good or better than my 2014. I know some manufactures detune their stuff when they find out it is fast. The 2016 has the same power and everything as the 2014 correct? I am a wheelie guy and loved all the power doing throttle wheelies at 80mph :-)

All the same with the exception that they fixed the hub by '15 so the problem is gone.
Stacked high at the dealers, get in if you want one!

I do not believe this is one of those times.

Found a dealer in the UK selling a 2015 brand new model with £1500 off list price. If the 2016 is the same it does seem a bit of a deal. The only catch was it was the orange one

Have ya git a good reason to believe so?(Note:I don't know either....its just what usually happens and the manufacturer diesnt publicly announce these changes as the people who bought the 1st released bikes would know FOR SURE there was reliability issues)

Possible examples in this case could be
•non squeaky brakes
•non leaky engine cases
•non shaky hubs(fixed on '15s supposedly)
•a better geared bike(IMO 5th and 6th are pretty useless....6th at least)

NOTE:I haven't had any of these issue yet....only issues with the dealer and not the bike.
So my KTM experience thus far is a little tarnished by my dealer experience but I still love the bike.

I'm a manufacturer (not motorcycles) and we all learn along the way with new models.

I am very thankful for early adopters, but we do learn over the first few years of production of a product. The little changes in materials, clearances, good ideas of how to do things better, certainly happen in any industry. And we do not announce those changes, there is no point, it only opens a "Pandora's box" in customer relations, update requests, stagnating older products in stock, not moving...... I had a choice of 'the latest or earlier last fall when I bought, I got the latest for those reasons.

Same here - I have an early 14 in the US and haven't experienced a single issue with the bike - from the day I bought it
I've enjoyed it and ridden it hard. However, I maintain it exactly as KTM suggest. I use Motorex oil and change it twice as frequently as the recommendation.

I did change out the front sprocket going down one tooth. I do look for 7th gear but other than that and a speedo that runs high
by at least 10% and maybe more i have no issues with the bike. In fact its the best bike I've owned in the 30 years I've been riding.

Zero issues you wrote about in 6000 miles on 1290 purchased in May 2014. Tight rear wheel, powerful brakes, not a drop of oil on outside of engine, still same gearing as 2016, but like many I put a 16T on which transforms the bike for street use. And just like the 2016, my 2014 has a brittle brake light which snaps and the rider doesn't find out until reading about it on a forum.

My family friend of 35 years owns the local KTM shop, and he'd love nothing more than to sell me a new and improved 2016, but he says only the msrp has changed.

I would say 2nd or 3rd year of production is best 2015/16
After that the purchasing department start to buy cheap bits to put them together , they call it VAVE in the automotive industry but it basically means add cheap shitty bits.
Can't see KTM/Baja not doing it that either

You are a fool to think that at least a little bit of your 1290 is not made in India and I imagine as time goes by it will only increase.
Indicators are shared with the 390, so there is at least that. Having said that my wifes 390 has never been back to the dealer for a warranty issue.

My 2016 ROCKS!
I can tell it is way more powerful than my 2014 was. I had to gear the 2014 down a tooth to do 3rd gear power wheelies like I wanted. This bike will stand straight up in 3rd, ride it wide open till it sets down and I hit 4th it will stand straight up again. The harder you push it the better it performs. My 2016 still has stock gearing and I love it!
I cruise my new Harley and ride this bike like a fool!

Dealer thought it might, but tbh I don't think he'd really been told either way! Wasn't a deal breaker.

BUMP, I replaced my 2015 with a 2016se and I noticed the 2016 didn't suffer as much when I replaced the cat with a bodis link pipe as it's a 30 mile ride to my dealer to install the Akra map neither bike wheelie from 3rd gear off the line, but both bikes will lift the front tyre at 8krpm in the first 4 even 5th gear!
