The word 'Ride' should have read 'Rode' I blame my fat fingers and the tiny iPhone keyboard.

And yes, BrandyH, he's not sure having bought the 1290 was a good idea. The horror!

I'm gonna get Aphex on mine one of these weekends and he can relay to the rest of you hardcore 990 guys what it's really about.

Put another check next in the 990 column, I did a track day at NJMP and lapped a 1290 :)

He had the nerve to ask me what traction control setting I was using...
I know I shouldn't do it but I do anyway

I just can't image how quick the 1290 would feel, my 990 feels pretty rapid to me. I can rarely deploy all of it's power on the roads here so I can't imagine why I'd need more, though no doubt sooner or later I'll want more. 8)

The reason I told Steve I wouldn't of bought the 1290 if I had to do it over again is because two years ago I got the itch for a new bike and fell victim of all the hype & promo videos and got the fever to own one.
I don't regret buying it because it is a awesome bike and a lot of fun. But I already owned a awesome bike that is more comfortable, just as fast (achieved 11.1 on both bikes in the 1/4) more confident inspiring in the corners and feels more of a hooligan bike easier to wheelie with a crisper throttle response & more agile at lower speeds with a better turning radius. Now that the newness of the KTM has wore off my Ducati Multistrada 1200 is my bike of choice and find myself just taking the 1290 out on short rides to keep the battery charged up.
Hands down the 1290 has the coolness factor over the Duc but I guess it's a sign of getting old (47) I really don't care about that anymore.

I know there are others on here that own/owned a Multistrada and would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm lucky enough to own a 2013 Pikes Peak Multi and a 2014 1290R. Love them both. Tend to use the Multi for long journeys and the SDR for more local stuff. I find the SDR quicker handling and therefore slightly better In the twisties. The SDR has quite a few mods e.g. full Akro system, PC5 and custom map, quick shifter, power parts triple and upgraded steering damper. The Multi is more comfortable has great suspension (skyhook) and the local Ducati dealer is excellent. I'd find it hard to choose if one had to go If push came to shove I'd probably keep the Ducati.

I still have my 2010 black multistrada, and its still a great bike, I've travelled nearly 70,000Ks on it, it has been the best bike I've owned. i did a few track days on it, but felt it unfair to thrash it on the track, then expect it to a good reliable tourer, so i brought a 1290R, its been a great bike also, but for any distant riding, or back road country riding, i always reach for the multis keys, i recently traded the 1290R in for the GT, i just wanted more of those creature comforts I'm 57, but still wanted a fast bike. comparing the multi and the GT back to back, well the GT is much more of a scalpel, rock solid, planted, and a nicer engine around town, the multi is sheer fun to ride, it has a little flex, it moves around when pushed hard, it has long travel suspension, but the bike is so forgiving, it handles everything you throw at it, for a big bike its nimble, it has its idiosyncrasies, but it can be ridden fast, I've surprised many bikes out on the road. Ducati made a great bike in the multi. the question now is, do i need 2 bikes similar?...........of cause i f..king do, i really like them both.

How did this thread get to all the talk about the Multi? Of which I still own. 2 completely different animals. I wont sell either my Multi or my 1290. The 1290 will see track use. The Multi wont. Tho like Dave said. It is quite capable of handling track conditions.

I know the OP started this thread just to get some responses. Cause,,,,, I know he knows a well set up 1290 will KICK a 990s arse :)

How have the 990 SD faired on Pikes Peak??, The Multi dominated it for a few years, now the 1290R is doing really well, 2nd and 3rd i believe. Any comparisons against the 990 on the hill.

Comrade Steve: So what did it actually show?

As far as I could see the the V1 bike with the rider wearing a backpack pulled ahead by a smidge of the V2 bike when cracking on in 4th,5th,6th but the V2 bike got ahead by a little bit more when using the quicks-shifter. That's a surprise 8) Looks a bit like the difference a blind man would like to see
