Do you run into other riders that don't know what you ride?

Postby SUPER DUKE #1 » Fri Dec 22, 2017 5:11 pm

Don't know how many times I meet other motorcycle riders that ask me "what is that?" Some you can tell them it's a Super Duke and then they ask "who makes it". Then when you tell them KTM, most will say "the dirt bike company, I didn't know they made street bikes". Still to this day. You can pretty much eliminate the Harley crowd as they don't think or know any other motorcycle company exists and you can include the non-motorcyclist to not know either.

I get that all the time as well, and not just by Harley riders. Anyone know when KTM actually introduced their first streetbike?

KTM's first street bike was the Duke 620 or Duke 1 in 1994.

I feel that happens when some wise guy who has heard of a small, eccentric company like Buell, figures that if your bike doesn’t look Italian or Japanese, he’s got it figured!

In 2008 yes...is that a Ducati?

Not now, KTM has grown a lot out of the "offroad market only".

To ride a bike is not a badge of knowledge.

This thread reminds me of the silly arse in 1977, who in the pub insisted the Jota had a side stand, I took him outside the pub to where my Jota was parked and asked him to show me where the side stand was. ‘ah, it must have fallen off’ he said. And what about the bracket for the side stand I replied, ‘there’s your problem’ he said, ‘they missed it off in production’.

This was the same guy who after changing an inner tube complained his rear wheel no longer felt right. We later found one of his tyre leavers between inner tube and tyre.

Another numpty. 20 years ago we bought my wife a cheap 125 to get her back into riding, an MZ. On selling the bike, cash exchanged, the new owner said, ‘what is it, is it a Honda?’
