WTB Super Duke 1290

Postby grommet » Sat Oct 31, 2015 5:17 pm

Update 6/13/2018: Bike purchased in Nov 2015. See amusing update posted today.

Currently in the market for an SDR.

Coming from an 02 FZ1, which I put 47K miles on in the last 4 years. It's been a great machine but I'm ready to move up to something with better electronics ( I mean, with electronics :) ) and more power. A good friend has an SDR and let me ride it - wow. Got to have one.

I do a mix of commuting, trackdays, twisties (NW Arkansas) and some long distance touring. I've seriously considered the 1190s but I need a good track/twisty bike first.

I'm in Wichita KS. One of the nice things about KS is that you can get almost anywhere in the lower 48 in a day from here. So I can fly and buy or drive to pick up. Looking for something with < 5K miles, would prefer de-catted and with aftermarket exhaust, and of course suspension upgrades get my attention before anything else.

Found one.

$12K even, 2014, 3800 miles. Remus exhaust, carbon fender and hugger, Rizoma fluid reservoirs, and some other cosmetic parts. It has a custom gold covered seat which I'll have to replace (Liberace is not my thing) and a gold license plate ring which will also have to go.

It's a great bike; I love it.

Grommet, did you get the bike?

Did you ride it from CA to KS ? How comfy is the gold seat?

Yes I did. Rode it 1400 miles in 2 days. LA to Flagstaff, then Flagstaff to Wichita. The seat was comfy enough, but my eyes had been cauterized from looking at it by the time I got home, so now I'm blind  :)

A guy on another forum suggested I spray paint the seat while waiting on a replacement. I don't think that would work, but it gave me another idea. mrs grommet has a supply of Sharpies, including a couple of the monster size. I got one of them out, enlisted the help of my kids, and before long:

It's at least tolerable now. Suddenly my eyesight returned to normal and life can go on.

Good god. You saved that poor creature.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Motorcycles applauds you.

It sounds like the 'rehabilitation' is off to a good start.

It seems to be a thing that people do. I guess it's a small crowd with such tastes.

Does it still have the AutoZone twisted gold ornamental steel license plate frame?

Nope. Just my boring license plate with no ring. You can see it in the photo above.

The gold ring with the 44 Mag screw/nut setup is free to anyone who wants it. Just pay shipping

Money does not equal taste - I think I saw somewhere that the lambo was smashed to pieces by the CHAV of an owner.. Shame!

As it is now, the bike gets compliments everywhere it goes. Even my group of riding pals, all conservative guys over 40, engineers, with dozens of bikes between them and many hundreds of thousands of riding miles, have said the gold wheels grow on you pretty quickly. The powder coat job is noticed as being top quality, and the dark gold color does not burn your eyes. They all kind of laughed at first, but now the bike is being welcomed warmly.

The bike has those orange LED strip signals in back, but they nearly obscured by the license plate. I'll need to move them outward where they are more visible.

I also ordered a Hepco & Becker sport rack for it, so I can add my top case for commuting and medium distance trips. I'm looking into airbox and intake mods, and maps that go along with them, but don't yet know enough about them to move forward. More research needed on that so I know what I'm getting into with it.

The Sharpie on the seat is holding up fine :)

What seat is that? Or is it just a cover for the stock seat?

The PO had the stock seat recovered. IOW, he paid someone real money to do that.

Would you like it? I'll gladly trade for a stock seat :)

2 1/2 years and 26000 miles on, I randomly searched google for "gold super duke" today and found some more pictures of my bike, prior to when I bought it.

They were on the Yelp profile of the guy I bought the bike from:

I'm not sure what to say.

The bike is running well, I ride it all the time, and the gold wheels are dope.
