Help! Bike shut off, speedo dead electrical issues

Postby so live » Fri Jul 05, 2013 2:02 pm

So yesterday afternoon I had to make a trip and I decided to to take the duke and not hit any highways.

So I'm riding down one of the more open roads in the middle of nowhere through a slight bend at about 80mph. The bike suddenly shut down, rear wheel locked for a split second (thankfully I wasn't in a tighter corner). I noticed the instrument cluster go through the start up sequence (tach sweep like when you first turn the key on) and then it was totally blank. So while rolling down the road with the clutch in I cycled the key a few times as well as the shut off switch with no luck.

So I pull over and notice that when I cycle the key I had relays clicking under the seat but no fuel pump prime and still no speedo.

I checked all the fuses under the seat and found nothing wrong. I unfortunately dropped fuse number 3 and just threw in a spare. Tried the key and the cluster now functions. The bike fired up and I claimed Success! I thought...

So now I notice that the turn signals and horn no longer function. The high/low beam switch works fine and so does the high beam flasher button thing.

I saw some posts about a diode behind the headlight mask for the turn signals so I will check that shortly.

Anyone have anything else to check with limited tools?

I have had very similar problems. With the issue also draining my battery, like a short or something.

I checked my battery connections and earth, rectifier, also got the bike serviced and locks replaced as my bike got nicked again. The shop could find no fault either, but my speedo/dials also began doing strange things; bike idling but clocks saying 6k revs, needle swinging but very laggy, etc.

I replaced my clocks (new type), second hand on ebay for 70 quid, bargain, and all seems well now.

I don't know if it was some electrical problems causing the clocks to malfunction, or the other way around. My old clocks were cracked so they accumulated a lot of moisture in them, which I think was at least a problem.

I had some of these same issues. Very frustrating. When I replaced the battery and regulator rectifier everything was good again.

Hmmm I put in a new battery around two months ago...

Made it home with no issues so time to start digging into grounds and whatnot. Ill let you guys know what I find.

Also noticed in addition to the horn and turn signals, the brake light doesn't work... Very weird that all three failed at the same time. They must be tied together somehow.

So I feel like an idiot... Fuse 3 blown. But the manual I have says fuse three runs the instrument cluster (supposedly a 2008 manual). So after the bike died I must have dropped in an already blown fuse in spot 3 and subsequently thought the lights and horn died. But, why did the cluster magically start working when I replaced this fuse with a blown one?

So two questions:
Is my manual wrong? Fuse three on my US 08 standard SD isn't supposed to power the speedo?

And, does the dead cluster sound aligned with a bad battery or rectifier (or something else)?

Cheers,

I planned to go for a long ride today. Got a red battery fault signal when I parked up to meet my mate. Battery totally dead. Had to get towed and send back to the shop.

I specifically asked them (twice) to check the rectifier etc, they said all was fine. Seems not.

Mine just did the same thing. I checked several things and eventually decided it must be the fuel pump relay. I changed the number 2 relay with the number 4 relay. Everything seemed to work fine again for about 10 minutes and then it all started over again.

What would cause repeated relay failures? Is this the real problem? What did you find?

Check your reg/rec and check your battery.

990's are very finicky and should be on a battery tender when not being ridden (I put mine on the tender every time I come home).
