USB Port for phone - GPS

Postby Sarasota_Steve » Mon May 09, 2016 7:53 pm

Hello,

Yesterday I installed a USB Port to charge the phone or supply power to the GPS. Very easy installation.

The dual port I bought is this one, paid $13.

I removed the inline fuse since the switched ACC1 connections are fused. It comes with a really long cable so you can connect it directly to the battery or if you want to go from the front of the bike to the space under the seat. I only needed around 30cm (2') of wire since I installed the port on the left black radiator cover with double stick tape.

This is the bracket where the port sits. You can remove the port when you need to take the radiator covers off.

The red/yellow wire is positive, brown is negative.

You can see the dielectric grease oozing out of the transparent OEM connectors. The blue are the shrink blade terminal connectors that I used and shrunk them with my heat gun.

That's all. Easy. Useful. Simple. Cheap.

whats the output of these?, i had a usb on my old bike but my iPhone on full brightness running maps would eat battery faster than it charged! got a more efficient phone, and app now so it shouldn't be an issue but id like as higher output as possible just incase

I want to fit a 12V socket on my SD as well. Where did you take the switched ACC1 from? When the key is out there is no power?

Behind the headlight.
Yes, when the key is off the power is off.

Where did you get the USB from?

My (old) Garmin 550 is starting to act up so I've found myself using my iPhone for nav but I need to wire it up. I like how you did this.

Coyo,

This is the Amazon link https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NEJ46V8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And dang it. It's cheaper now than when I bought it in May '16.
