From what I saw I think he would have been killed instantly so at least he didn't suffer. I wonder is helmet chin straps are made to fail at a critical load. Thinking about it the strap needs to be the weaker link when compared to the neck!

there is a very graphic high res slow mo video, shot from the back (very hard to watch), in the aftermath when Colin is getting to his feet, Marco's helmet goes rolling by and it looks like the strap is unfastened.
i feel so bad for Colin too, most of the focus is on Marco, as it should be, but Edwards took a huge beating as well, and i cant believe Rossi stayed on his bike! just a horrible and sad, sad day.
