Suspension Question

Postby Turkishexpress » Thu Dec 15, 2016 5:22 am

Chatted it up with Dave Moss on FB to see what he would recommend for my heavy ass and he recommended 1.1kg front fork springs and 12kg shock spring. Does anyone know where one can source these? I will also have to get the valving done on both ends but I can take that to a local suspension shop. I contacted the KTM dealers in the area but still have not heard back. Honestly I don't trust the one that's closest to me since the last time I had them do some work. Any direction is appreciated.

I would have thought the local suspension shop that does your valving can get any spring you specify, they just have to be the correct dimensions and weight to fit. Certainely dent need to be ktm expensive :?

You would think so but it seems that no one makes the springs so I have to have them made. KTM dealership in Woodstock just contacted me and they spoke to KTM North America and they even recommended Cannon Racecraft to just make the springs. I had them make me custom 13.5kg rear shock spring in the past for my Multistrada so I'm going to have to go with them I guess.

Because I could'nt source any heavier springs for my 990sm,my suspension tech had a spring maker slightly shorten the stock springs which stiffened them up to the right rating and a 1inch spacer fills the gap.Works great.Cheers

Try talking with Klaus Huenecke owner of the US Hyperpro suspension store:
http://www.epmperf.com/

He has built springs and shocks for a few of my bikes. He will build to your weight and riding requirements.

That's the direction I'm heading now but actually have the springs custom made to order through www.cannonracecraft.com. Apparently they make the springs for majority of manufacturers. Spoke to them and they can do both ends for $280 which is awesome. I just need some measurements to give them however.

Alright, just ordered the Andreani front fork cartridges and checking with Penske to see if they can make a double clicker for my application. Apparently the WP rear shock is not rebuildable let alone a re-valving job :(

I ordered mine through www.superbikeunlimited.com. I think it's already shipped. I checked their FB page to make sure they were on point and their reviews were excellent.

Got a message from TSE (www.tracksidesuspension.com) this morning. They spoke to Penske and they can make a double clicker with a remote reservoir but they need measurements to make it happen since they don't have one currently. Yes it will be ride height adjustable. If the Andreani cartridge comes in by Saturday, I will take the bike to them this weekend. If not then next weekend so that they can do what they need to do.

Will do. It might be a short while. Apparently it's going to take about a month turn around right now with all the work they have and the time it's going to take for the Penske to be made. Not a big deal considering the high temperature for the foreseeable future won't be more than 20F.

Keep us updated, if the Penske works out, i'll have to give TSC a call. I just had traction dynamics with the correct spring and re-valve the stock shock but I don't think it worked all that well last year. This bike deafly needs more rear ride height to turn in better.

When I spoke to TSE they told me that revalving the stocker would not work out well. They said they wouldn't even spend the time to rebuild it. That's when I decided to go aftermarket but didn't want a TTX for something that'll never really see track time.

No fork oil included but I knew that was covered in the quote I got from TSE for doing the fork job. I just made sure it would be the oil recommended by Adreani which is Ohlins. Their packaging is simple but effective and has some good instructions if you're into doing your own fork service.

The TTX doesn't have a ride height I just ability, that is why I am interested in a Penske if it works

I just received Andreani front fork cartridges. Ordered Dec 20. I guess with the holiday break it took a little longer. DHL charged me another $43 Canadian dollars. I think I paid a little less then what superbike unlimited has on their site even with the DHL brokerage fee(which I would have paid no matter who I bought them from)
They don't look bad. Instructions are simple. I just don't understand what height or amount of oil I need to add.
Do you have any info on this Mr Express, or anyone?

Very nice! There is two things I don't touch on a bike. One of them is the suspension internals so I wouldn't be able to give you an educated answer on the oil level. However, Andreani customer service is supposed to be very good. Did your package come with a number for technical questions? Mine did but I gave it to the shop.

Got the bike back about two weeks ago. Weather here in Chicago was in the 60-70s for a week (insert global warming here), so got to ride it a bunch. We all know that any properly set up aftermarket suspension could have some profound effects on any bike but I have to say the stock suspension on the SDR is really horrible for a heavy person. The Andreanis and the Penske rear shock made this bike enjoyable on the turns finally. The bike is plain stable in the turns, especially bumpy ones. The straight stuff is much more enjoyable as well thanks to the bumps being absorbed as they should. Anyways, here are some quick pics... You'll notice the red rear shock spring. Didn't have much of a choice here unless I wanted to get it powdercoated and wait for a while longer and I really don't care about that kind of stuff.

Yes. I emailed them just to make sure. Apparently you need 2 X 1'' wrenches. A thin one for the bottom apparently.
