1290r trouble starting

Postby bigred1100s » Thu Apr 20, 2017 1:26 pm

Guys, so every so often when i try to start the bike the engine tries turning over and it just cuts out and the speedo cluster screen also dies out and goes blank and nothing happens. I'll have to wait about a minutes with the key completely pulled out and try again after about a minute or more. Sometimes it starts and other times I'd have to go a few more times and now this issue is becoming more and more frequent. Can anyone on here help? Thanks

Are the battery cables tight ?
I had the same issue thought it was the
battery only to find a loose cable.

Guys its not the Battery and neither is it a loose terminal. I'm beginning to suspect the starter Relay, I had a similar issue with my MV Agusta. Your thoughts?

I had that same thing happen to my SV 650 and it was the relay's fuse. I bought the relay/starter solenoid (Not sure if your 1290 even has a solenoid) and when I replaced it, I found one of the 2x30A fuses was loose. So I guess if I would've checked the fuses and found the loose connection that would have fixed it.

Since I had all the new parts I replaced it and it now runs like a champ.

Good luck,

How do you know it's not the battery?

because i pulled it apart and there was no loose terminal and its intermitting. It starts sometimes and when i hot-wire the relay it starts every single time.

I've been having the same issue until last monday when it wouldn't start at all (at night of course) - and eventually, after trying a few times, showed me blank screens... I did think starter relay, but the KTM guy suggested I have a look at the battery. Plopped in a new one two days ago and voila! it started first try.

Two days later (today) I had the same issue again, resetting of the screens and no cranking when I hit the starter button. Tried again and it started, but I seriously think that the issue was maybe not the battery.

The resetting of the screens would suggest a big voltage drop = big power drain/short circuit , no?

Maybe you are not charging the battery. Once you start it check the battery voltage, should be 14-14.75V. Use voltmeter to check it, I think KTM has a screen showing battery voltage too.

or that! You could be right - it's definitely charging but I've been doing a lot of short distance riding lately, could be that the charging is not sufficient... (it's showing 14.1-14.2V with the engine running and 12.3-12.5V with the engine off)
Cheers!

same problem.....New Battery and new relay and the bike starts when ever it decides to and other times blank screen. Someone suggested starter switch?
