990 exhaust Y piece - is the R version different?

Postby dipper » Wed Aug 16, 2017 7:44 pm

As title, I'm doing a bit of a restoration on a 2006 SD. It came fitted with a carbon single seat tail unit. I'm refitting the stock rear end and the exhaust doesn't fit! At first I though the Akra cans were too long but comparing it to my 2008 it looms like the Y piece is different? Is this the case and are there any other differences between the R and non R exhausts?

I know the OEM Akra header for the SDR is bigger than the standard OEM header for the SD. Not sure about the y-pipe.

Best of luck,

Pics would help, where is it not fitting? The frame mounts? The rear fender?

not sure how to attach pics now PB is no more. it's the length(and possibly the angle) that's the issue. the cans protrude too far back and foul the rear fender/mudguard. comparing to the 2008 the y piece extends further back there fore pushing the cans rearward.
hope that makes sense!

I have the R single seat conversion on my SD and the Akra Evos fit regardless of seat configuration, the SDR headers were only different in diameter towards the cylinder head - 99.9% sure the fittings and pipe work there after were the same. Is it possible that the Y piece is not Akropovic? As the others have said pics would help but fully understand the frustration of photo bucket (i have just deleted my account in protest!- effing robbing cnuts) If it helps i will happily nip to the man cave and measure the ones on my bike so you have an idea of whether you have a "standard" akra y pipe of something different.

failing that if you use WhatsApp of Facebook pm me your details and i could send you over some pics to compare?

Cool. That would be appreciated. Diameter of y piece is the same 60mm. Pipe work all looks stock other than there's a welded fitting on each header that looks like it might be for fitting o2 probes for tuning. Not sure if this was a feature of the earlier bikes as my 08 doesn't have them. It all worked fine with the single seat unit

Pm me your details and I'll send some pics
Thanks

If you need a standard set of headers this guy is selling a set cheap.

These would shot blast back to as new condition I'm sure

saw that but looks like just the headers, not inc the y piece.

woohoo! it works. cheers steve

ive pretty much forced the cans on but they're putting a fair bit of pressure on the rear fender. length isn't so much an issue but the inward angle of the cans is.

That looks normal for those cans.

A buddy of mine has em on a standard SD as well here is a link to some pics of how they fit his bike: https://imgur.com/a/kIwF0
