07 SD not starting - cranks but won't fire

Postby rotobob » Mon Feb 19, 2018 2:38 am

Was riding today, about 50 miles in, I stopped at gas station. 5 minutes later, I started back up, but the bike wouldn't start. I wasn't paying the closest attention because I wasn't expecting it, but I think it fired up for about a second the first time and died, and then no fire at all since then. the whole ride up until this moment was perfect mechanically. 55 deg F weather. I was only about a mile from home, so I pushed it back... it was really awesome.

What I know so far:
1. Temp was at half bars and cooling fan was not engaged
2. All fuses have been tested good.
3. The engine cranks over fast, showing 9V during cranking and after stopping, and going back to 12.4 after a few seconds.
4. I turn the bike on, and the normal cycle goes through. just N and oil light are on. When cranking, the FI light comes on and stays on after I stop cranking.

Mods:
PC3 tuned
Rottweiller intake with SAS delete
GRB pipes

Any ideas? I don't see any posts so far with this issue really. I'll update as I search more.

There’s a lot of old and some current threads on this exact and similar issues - does the FI light simply stay on or flash an error code?

The light stays on. I've read through lots of the older posts and I keep find that this might be a battery issue, but also, it might just clear itself up, ugh.
Battery issue seems suspect as it cranks very well, but who knows...

I multimetered the fuel relay, crash sensor, clutch sensor, sidestand sensor, coils. They were all according to the manual.

There is a fuel smell when cranking. 12.4 V when about to crank.

Still haven't tried a new battery...

My guess is battery as per similar current thread also.

Easy to check if its the battery.

Jump start it using a car battery. If it fired up easy it was the battery, if not its something else...

Follow the Shadowman route.

The big clue here is the 9v on cranking. 10v on most vehicles is ok cranking, 9v is getting into duffer battery territory.

The Superduke ECU needs a full fat charge 12.5 to 13.5v to tick nicely.

The FI light together with 9v on cranking strongly suggests new battery time.

If you do follow the Shadowman route, caution may be appropriate as an over capable battery (big AH) may cause damage.

Over the years I have jumped mine and other bikes from a large Audi and a small truck without any issues.

One lead on the battery terminal the other earthed on the frame or suitable metal part and you are good to go.

If its not starting then you can exclude the battery as the issue. My guess is that it will fire up but the proof is out there.....

It's looking like a battery issue, but still working on it. I hadn't been able to get my Yukon close enough to the bike yet...

When connected to a Yukon battery, even when running, the truck side says 14.4v and the bike side says 12.8v on the terminals. It's rising on the bike side slowly.

But even when tethered, the bike voltage drops to 9-10v on cranking.

Hold on to your seats... this thriller will continue.

OK, so, the new battery doesn't even work as well as the first one... scrap that for now.

On re-testing everyting, I realised I didn't really test the fuel pump correctly. The relay clicks, and shows 12v for 2 seconds, then 0v. Terrific. But, the fuel pump is not doing anything. I supplied the fuel pump with 12v manually at the connector and it also did nothing. So that appears to be it. I guess I thought I was hearing it spin up, but as I've only had the bike 3 months, I didn't remember the sound righ over the throttle body.

So, I pulled the fuel pump and tested powering it, bypassing all fuel pump wiring, and still dead, so that's apparently the issue.

I was going to replace just the pump motor ($69), but the two phillips screws holding the unit togeter are seemingly too tough to loosen without stripping. Not sure if that's going to work out or not. Anyone else done this? The alternative is $400+ for a whole new unit.

Is the fuel pump from the 1290 R compatible with the 2007 990 SD? They look identical and the part numbers seem interchageable.

1290 / 990 fuel pump? Part numbers, almost the same, but different + different prices.

Right, so I took a a fuel pump from a 2015 SDR and installed it. The units are identical minus the teabag filter is different and the adjustable fuel output connector is slightly angles differently. I changed the hose as it is differently shaped and so are the couplers.

It slid right in, bolted up and she fired up on the second crank! Fantastic.

Anyway, I can't ride yet as it's snowing, but I expect the problem is solved.

Thanks all for advice and help. The big problem was the initial diagnosis was measuring the voltage at the fuel pump connector. It measured 0 volts, but when I measured it at first, it was after the initial 2 second power cycle. after going through it all again, I tested the connectors going through the power up cycle, not just keeping the ingition in ready to crank mode. As soon as I saw that voltage on power up, I tested the fuel pump with external 12v power and saw it was dead.

Ah you've got that nice feeling you get when your 990 has broken down and you've finally got it going again, I know that feeling well!

Also good to know that the 1290 fuel pump can fit.
