Wheelie control ? and performance mods advice

Postby Damacca » Wed Jan 03, 2018 11:43 am

Hi all

2015 sdr
First 1 k service
Dealer wants to bend me over for $600 aus to remove the anti wheelie control ,ktm download ,race or circuit pack download I think he said.

Wtf
Thought there was something not right with it when try a few minor 2nd gear monos
And 2nd to 3rd no go at all

Was not aware of this 'safety issue ' pre installed
Q.1
Is this total bs
Q.2
Is the price total bs

Can't see a future with this 'safety police installation' so will have to have it removed some how

Setting .
Mtc off
Sup moto

Any hoo
Am thinking of going ,as the cash flow allows of course.
Stage three Rottweiler air filter mod and sas/canister removed, possibly dual 40 mm stacks,
Decat link pipe
Db killer removed from standard muffler
Arka map ,will ask the cost of this tomorrow when I get bike back from shop!

Any advice or local help ,Melbourne
Would be awesome

Know a solid mechanic in the area ?

Cheers
Macca

The ONLY anti-wheelie on the pre ‘17 SDR is the traction control: MTC.
If the MTC is off, you can flip the bike all the way over if you want.
First 3 gears will lift the front even if you’re sitting on the handlebars.
Either you’re not really turning the MTC off or there’s something else wrong with the bike.
There is no “race pack” or “circuit pack” for pre ‘17s. The only thing even related to that is the “race dongle” which preserves your MTC and ABS settings between turn offs. Without it, those settings revert to ON when you turn the bike off. Perhaps this is your problem?

I don't own a 1290 heck I don't even own a 990 anymore but one thing I learned a long time
ago is that some dealers are full of crap!
When you have a dealer telling you that you need a radiator guard on a air cooled engine well Huston I think we have a problem and this is what happened to me one time.
So you have done the right thing checking for answers on this forum :D

Thanks for the info

Mtc is definitely off and sport on
And the dealer , mechanic is not so knowledgeable as ktm aus tech department confirmed ,no anti wheelie
Another shop confirmed this.

It does get an electronic update though

Will see later on if I can loop the bastard ..

just kidding

Prick was still trying to sell me the pack this morning over the phone ,will get bike back soon.

Cheers for the feed back

This is pure speculation. I seem to remember hearing from 1290 folks that there is a break in period and once over a specific amount of miles a dealership can and will remove something in the electrical software system that opens up more fury out of the beast. This could be where the system has not been enabled or maybe disabled creating a weaker fuel code. I believe that KTM also likes a looks at the bike for valve clearance issues at this same post break in period. Some-one in the know needs to speak here. I think your need to talk directly with KTM headquarters to get the straight poop is in order.
The 990 first service was a whopping $600 US. First 1k on a 2015???

Think my mental skills were more the issue with the anti wheelie control..
Now that the flood gates are open with the revs ,Post 1 k service, it goes from 2nd through to 5 on the back wheel no probs

Fkn great fun these bikes ,so easy to ride and I am by no means fast or later on the brakes than the next guy on blah blah

2017 has wheelie control on from the day it rolls out the door I believe ,ktm tech support plus two other bike stores confirmed, download from ktm that old mate was trying to sell me for the 15 model ,no luck for old boy there thanks to another 'honest' bike service dept.
600 hard earned if your in Aus for the download, shop will do you a solid and install for free I was told ,top blokes them is .

Does anyone have a work around on the throttle dead zone/free play ,slack ,movement between stop and throttle open
Feel like sloppy connection, just would prefer no movement in the twisting movement from stop to open

Cut the Db killer out of the standard muffler and it's annoying the neighbors, not so cool
But still. Sounds great on the gas .

When I bought my 2018 model I cherry-picked some bits for it and included the Track Pack, specifically so that the best wheelie bike on the market isn't electronically emasculated. Annoyingly, wheelies are still interfered with by the electronics...
I've turned the MTC (traction control) right down to level 1 and experimented with the anti-wheelie as the display on the dash isn't as clear as it could be:
Anti Wheelie Mod <on> or <off>? Initially I thought that it should be <off> but is that referring to the mod (ie modification), or the mode? I've tried it both ways (oo-er :wink: ) and the result is the same; wheel comes up but the electronics can be felt holding it back like a rev-limiter and no amount of throttle application will persuade it to lift higher or stay up. One of two things will then happen;
1) The wheel will drop under limited load, and as it instantly picks up speed again, the electronics think all is well and reapply full power and as the throttle is pretty much wide open (normally in 3rd gear) the front immediately lifts again for a better wheelie, but the pick up can be quite savage and I'd prefer it to be modulated by me on the initial lift please, or
2) After a couple of seconds of interference the power is abruptly cut, like hitting the kill switch, and the front crashes back down - not good for comfort or control (nor head bearings).

I took the bike back to the dealer to have the Track Pack reinstalled, which took a couple of minutes, and the result is exactly the same :? If anyone else has a Gen 2 model and has the answers I'd like to hear them.

As an addendum to my previous post (above) - and to make the first post of 2020, it's awfully quiet in here recently - I have a theory regarding the Anti-Wheelie Mod for the Gen.2 model, namely that the mod comes as part of the Track Pack software, and as a result may only be active when the bike is in Track mode - kind of makes sense, I don't know why it didn't occur to me before. So far I haven't used Track mode as usual niceties for road use such as trip meter aren't displayed. It won't be a big issue to dip in and out of Track mode when I fancy a bit of tomfoolery - it can even be done on the move, only requiring the throttle to be closed momentarily to activate it following menu selection, though I wouldn't recommend doing that as it requires far too much time spent looking at the instrument screen while making selections, time more safely spent looking at the road. Best achieved by pulling over in a safe spot, making the menu selections and resuming the ride.

Once Spring arrives and the bike is back on the road (c/w the full Akrapovic system fitted and the re-map done), I shall test out my theory and let y'all know whether my hypothesis is null or not.

Happy New Year SuperDukers :D 8)
