My Android Biking App - Bikers Best Friend

Postby AndyCr15 » Sun Jun 18, 2017 7:08 am

Around 5 months ago I was told there is a chance I could be made redundant in 3 years time. Okay, I get plenty of warning at least, so I decided to learn how to code to open my options up. I learnt some Java and have then moved over to making Android apps, of which I have made 4 or 5 now.

This particular one was initially intended to be an aid for ride outs. You add other bikers for the day (or whatever set time period) and you can see where each other are. There would be a big red emergency button, should anyone have issues, that would alert others to them. I'm now thinking this will be a separate app, when I finally learn how to do it!

What I have done can be seen here - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidandyuk.bikersbestfriend

It's still beta, there could be bugs still, but I think it's reasonably stable. I do worry that I might still need to make changes that could mean loss of data (wipe of app data, for a new data format). Having said that, last night I made some changes that caused crashes unless a data wipe was performed and I did manage to code around it, so hopefully I can do this in the future now.

I have around 30 users with quite a high retention rate (36 installs, only 5 uninstalls) which I hope means it's an app that people like and can use. I just released update 19 to the Play store and feel I'm getting very close to an actual release (no longer beta).

Anyway, after all that, I'd love to know what people think. At this point I'd love to hear about any thoughts you have on it, no matter how small (things like someone recently pointed out entering your reg should always be in capitals through the app)

Thanks!

P.S. You will hopefully like the app theme :)
P.P.S. - I'm afraid the locations are UK based and units are fixed to Miles at the moment
P.P.P.S. The feature list, as seen in the store listing is -

A handy app for all bikers, be it for locations, maintenance logs, to do lists, MPG calculations. Hopefully everything you could need.

-------------------------------------------------------

GARAGE

- Add up to 8 bikes to your garage. Each one bike has
- Get MOT and service warnings
- track how long (time and miles) since you replaced certain parts of the bike
- Fuelling logs Record miles, litres and price
- MPG for each bike (as you add fuelling details)
- The cost spent on each bike

-------------------------------------------------------

MAINTENANCE

- A Maintenance log, log any work you do on the bike
- Include any costs in the log, for total costs to be tracked
- Mark Maintenance as Service or MOT or leave as just a regular log
- Select parts replaced and it tracks how old they are (miles and date)
- Add historical work, don't worry if you've owned the bike for years and just got the app, set the date the work happened and it's logged

-------------------------------------------------------

TO DO LIST

- Log future work that needs doing
- Record the quoted/expected price of this work
- Include a URL so you can find parts later

-------------------------------------------------------

LOCATIONS

The app is preloaded with
- Biker Hotspots in the UK like Ace Cafe, Rykers and Loomies.
- UK race tracks
- Upcoming Auto Shows
- Traffic, downloading live traffic data and see it on your map
- Your own favourites. Add and remove as you wish.

All these are listed by proximity to you.

Any of these locations can be navigated to (by linking through to Google Maps)

Does this app offer route planning?

One thing that would make any motorcycling app the dogs bollocks would be routing with full weather integration.
Plenty of websites publish rain radar info and some extrapolate for 3 hours ahead.

I keep searching for a weather app that could to do this.
If a rain band intersects with your route, even better if it does so at a time when you're likely to be there, it could then warn you &/or attempt to re-route around it, or suggest a location for you to stop and get a coffee to avoid getting drenched.

This kind of app would be great for when away from home (touring etc).

It wasn't discovered, it was invented, by the French..
Hence why we have a healthy disrespect for it.

That's what I'd like. An easy click and drag route plotting app that doesn't use the hateful Google maps. This useless mapping system has spread like a disease online. You can't plot anything on a computer without being hampered at some point by Google.
I used to used Ordnance Survey maps. You could go on their site, zoom in on the bit you wanted and print and you'd get a proper map with full detail, not the simplified child's version of a map with vast areas left blank and 90% of the roads reduced to invisible pencil lines like you get with Google.
I want to be able to click on a start point and then drag a high-lighted route of my choosing to my destination in one go and then click save and either transfer that route to a satnav or simply print it off and stick it on the tank. I don't need any other intervention from the system. I don't want my route "corrected" as I go. I don't need short-cuts, visitor information or "suggestions" appropriate to my mode of transport.

That's the trouble with apps. They try to be too clever. We don't need computers to do our thinking for us.

Nope, no route planning. Tbh that's above my ability at this point anyway.

Sent feedback via the app, but when in the Garage and you press the back button on the phone, the app crashes.

I think I found that bug, thanks. Looks like I hadn't checked there was a bike added before trying to save the TaxDue month.

How is this achieved?
Just wondering if it's text based service or using phone data connection?

Might be nice if you could set your own bike picture as the background, or choose from a library of various bikes.

The group riding thing will more likely be a new app... once I learn how to do it.

It would be done through data. Everyone would need to register in one way or another, you group up and each persons location data would be uploaded and shared to others in that group. In theory it shouldn't be that hard.

The key question for me is Could it be used to prosecute me in the highly unlikely event that I did something illegal ??
