1290 dealership deals

Postby iannowi » Sat Nov 16, 2013 4:15 am

just a quick question to the UK guys who are waiting delivery of their new 1290 .
I know the bike is going on sale for £13995, but have any of you guys been offered any discount or deals from the dealerships.
I phoned one dealership yesterday, and was offered a free first service, if I bought the 1290 from them.
Just wondering what sort of deals, if any, have you guys been offered...

Where are you based? Which dealer are you talking to about buying. Bristol have 4 sold already so can't see them offering much of a deal for a while

Seriously - $22.5k (usd) - ? Here I was thinking that $18K would be unreasonable (compared to Aprilia, BMW, etc.).

Should be real interesting what they let them go for over here ... With all the comparable choices available in 2014, they'll get crushed - which won't motivate the aftermarket a whole lot.

Thing to do is wait until they don't sell,,,,and let the give away begin,,,,that's went the deals will be had,,,but there will always be those who have to be the first in line for the latest and greatest,,their the one's who will pay the premium price and suffer when they re-sell for the next "latest and greatest" thing to arrive,,,,,which may happen as soon as next year :!: patience is a virtue,,,

All goes without saying - and solid advice, for the patient anyway ... 8)

Unless it were truly able to replace every street bike I own out-of-the-box (which it couldn't, if for no other reason than nostalgia - lol), I still wouldn't shell out 22+ large for one, ever. Not so much a cheap bastard, but for that kind of scratch, I'd rather put a nice used 998 or 1098 "R" in my garage (or living room perhaps).

Right there with you. For that money id get an 1199, but from what I heard at my local dealership in LA, they had a few 1290's in and out, sold out fast. So people are buying, but id rather just wait for someone to lay it down or get tired of the nutter trying to kill you

Check these first free services out. Some say free service and then charge you for oil and filters, labour is free :!:

First service on a LC8 based motor is rather expensive due to the lengthy time it takes to check valve clearances, so you will be saving a lot even if the labour is free.

If it's anything like here in Oz they are all sold out and on back order, so good luck with that theory.

KTM seem to on a roll here in Oz with the 1290 nd the 390 both sold out and on back order. While demand is high prices wont go south. Seems to me that their teaser advertising has worked exceptionally well and has attracted new ownership to KTM. Now just hope it doesnt go down the Ducati path and spew out a mob of tossers like it has since the mid 90's.

The 1290 price did not bother me one bit I wanted one so I bought one, I don't really care how much I loose on a bike as I get a new one every 12 to 18 months & have been doing this for the past 10 years, I am at a time in my life if I want something & I can afford it I get it, my 2011 990 SMR cost nearly the same price as my 1290 so I had no problems forking the cash out for the 1290. In Oz we are paying US$6000.00 more than the guys in the US for the same bike, I would love to pay what you guys are paying.

I have a few mates waiting for their 1290's (no stock) so I can't see KTM Australia dropping the price while demand is high & supplies are short.

I'm based in Hong Kong where all vehicles have a 100% first registration duty tax and I found the price was surprisingly good for this region.

Here is what we pay to ride these machines around often congested roads:
KTM 1290 and Aprilla Tuono USD $22,800
BMW S1000R USD $24,500
Ducati 1200S USD $25,500
Ducati Palingale basic model USD$33,000

Sure they are expensive and sure you could buy something else.
But to paraphrase from a recent article about these bikes:
Value is more than a simple cost and features analysis, its also about how the bike makes you feel.

I feel damned good!

Prices based on market perceptions. Plus overheads in this city are high and BWM have a large operation whereas the KTM shack probably has less tools in it than your own esteemed garage. :D

So to sum up the original question - some dealers are better than others; dealership specials will be hard to find due to the demand in part fueled by a clever marketing campaign; the prices are what they are and somewhere else in the world someone is paying more so buy if you can but don't cry.
And don't expect to see my 1290 listed for sale anytime in the foreseeable future :D

has anyone bought one in the US or rather in CA that can shed some light on their deal? A friend of mine got quoted 20k out the door for a demo (350 miles) - that seems rather high...

One day near the end of May I decided that I was going to get off my butt and buy a 1290. I had the bike less than a week later at 1K under list.

My conversation with the dealer went like this:
Me: Do you have any 1290s in stock?
Dealer: Yes, I have one!
Me: What color is it? (a really stupid question by the way)
Dealer: Black.
Me: How much you asking for it?
Dealer: Can you hold while I check?
Me: Yup (already ready to pay what ever she asked)
Dealer: I just checked my papers, $15,999!
Me: When can I come for it?

Haven't been that lucky in years!

I'm guessing that the moral of my story is that it might be a good idea to spend a day cold calling dealers to see what they have and what they want for it!

FFash,

You did get lucky. His paper work had a mistake. It should have read $16,999. I always say, better to be lucky than good. Because your phone conversation shows your not :)
The 1290 is what the 990 was suppose to be.

I ride Ktm Motorcycles, yep :-)
